About this Event

Indies UNITE! is a group of independent bookstores, working together to bring you powerful, hard-hitting events. We are proud to present the first in an anti-racist panel series featuring authors, illustrators, librarians, and industry professionals focused on anti-racism conversations. Join us for this first panel, featuring Valerie Bolling, Sharon Draper, Cicely Lewis, and Cheryl Willis Hudson and Wade Hudson! We will discuss teaching anti-racism in the classroom, how to create a safe space for students of color, and how to tackle talking about anti-racism with students.

Cheryl Willis Hudson and Wade Hudson are authors and co-founders of Just Us Books, Inc, an independent company that focuses on Black interest books for young people. They have published over thirty books, including The Talk: Conversations about Race, Love and Truth.

Sharon Draper is an acclaimed author of many books for teens including Blended and Out Of My Mind. She has been honored as the National Teacher of the Year and was selected as Ohio’s Outstanding High School Language Arts Educator and Ohio Teacher of the Year.

Valerie Bolling is a classroom teacher, instructional coach, and author of Let’s Dance! Her desire is for children of all backgrounds to see themselves in her stories.

Cicely Lewis is School Library Journal’s 2020 School Librarian of the Year. She started the #ReadWoke program at her school in 2017 and the movement has gained nation-wide success as a book club and literacy advocacy program.
